(COLORECTAL) BOWEL CANCER MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE

Colorectal Cancer

Every year there are thousands of new cases of bowel cancer in the UK. Men and women are similarly affected, usually over the age of 40. We still know very little about what causes this disease, which is also known as ‘colorectal cancer’. Recent studies have shown that bowel cancer affects more people who have a diet of high fat and low fibre. It has also been suggested that this cancer may be associated with a high level of alcohol intake.

Symptoms

One of the most common symptoms of bowel cancer is a change of bowel habits. There could be growing constipation, coupled with excessive diarrhoea. Blood and mucus may also be found in the excrement. A feeling that your bowel hasn’t been completely emptied is fairly common if there is the tumour in the rectum. This is not very comfortable and you may constantly need to use the toilet. Vague discomfort may be felt in your stomach. You may also feel exhausted and dehydrated because you have lost some blood.

Late Diagnosis

These symptoms should put a doctor on notice that there may be bowel cancer however on many occasions the illness is not diagnosed or is diagnosed considerably later than it should have been. This means that treatment may be more radical and extensive than would otherwise have been necessary had the disease been diagnosed at an early stage. Both radiation and chemotherapy are unpleasant and late diagnosis may mean substantial increase in pain and suffering both as a result of the illness and as a result of more comprehensive treatment and in the worst cases may mean that the opportunity to recover as a a result of treatment has been lost.
